Enterprise SharePoint portals should establish and\or solidify design precedence as well as reinforce corporate brand.  This is often not the case, as SharePoint's standard templates are mass produced and look it. 

Applying customized branding and rich media to SharePoint portals is a more difficult task than most people anticipate, due to the variety of SharePoint UI elements and web parts that can be styled.  Figuring out both how and where to control the look and feel of those elements and web parts can be daunting.  SharePoint's Core.CSS, just one of the main stylesheet files, has more than 1,500 lines of code alone.

Much of our SharePoint branding success is attributed to our understanding of SharePoint's limitations.  These must be understood in the early design phases to avoid delays as a result of mid-project design changes.  Our designers find the best way to accommodate limitations and also possess the requisite technical skills to circumvent them all together.  This could mean leveraging a JavaScript library such as JQUERY, creating custom navigations, or utilizing a host of other solutions.
