Systems upgrades for any technology are generally not smooth, and SharePoint
is no exception. Upgrading or migrating to a new SharePoint environment or
version is difficult to perform without incident, since most environments
contain customizations, third party add-ons, and, in some cases, hot fixes that
are not supported in the new environment. The critical element in
performing an upgrade is the identification of SharePoint components that are
not supported in the new environment. This allows appropriate test and
deployment plans to be built for these pieces.
To this end, Allin upgrade and migration services are driven from an
environment Health Check assessment.
A Health Check involves a certified SharePoint consultant reviewing your
existing environment to determine adherence to Microsoft recommended guidelines
for governance and taxonomy, as well as customizations that won’t be supported
in the new environment. This includes third party add-ons.
From this review we produce a Migration Plan detailing the following:
- SharePoint components requiring special deployment consideration and testing
procedures
- Recommended clean-up of the environment prior to an upgrade or migration,
including suggested governance and taxonomy and orphan site clean-up
- Specifics for a test plan
- Tasks to be performed and timelines
With the Migration Plan in hand, we move to an iterative testing phase in
which we perform the upgrade in a QA environment and adjust the plan based on
issues encountered. Once the migration or upgrade can be done without fail
and all unsupported components are deployed and tested, a production deployment
will be done and a roll-back plan put in place.
