Allin Consulting Migrates and Consolidates AZ’s IT Systems, Cutting their Operation Costs

Allin provides IT Systems Migration and Support to AZ Freight.

November 20, 2009

The Challenge:
AZ Freight is a container freight shipping company that has been in business for over 20 years. They have offices in New Jersey, Charleston, Atlanta, Chicago, Miami, and Los Angeles. AZ’s shipping, cargo, and freight services include: Full-Service Bonded Transportation, Container Freight Stations for De-Consolidation and Consolidation, Local Trucking and Distribution, Warehousing, and coast-to-coast trucking.

AZ was managing all its IT remotely from a single location, and was not adhering to best business practices for hardware support and application development. As a result they experienced operational inefficiencies, including frequent server and application errors that required constant maintenance (approx 1FTE to manage) and additional, local vendor support at each location.  Excessive code was being unnecessarily maintained, and key business data was not archived properly.

The Solution:
AZ partnered with Allin Consulting to consolidate their existing applications and software, as well as migrate systems to the Allin Consulting datacenter. At the completion of the project, AZ consolidated its applications from 35 to 5, and its servers from 25 to 7.

The process began with a review of all AZ’s existing servers, software, hardware, and network capabilities in each of AZ’s locations. All running services and applications were documented, and a review of instances and code base was conducted. Next, Allin Consulting built a consolidation and migration plan to outline the transition.  The end goal was to put all AZ sites on a single, secure network with connectivity to the Allin Consulting datacenter. Allin Consulting designed a new consolidated server and application architecture and built a multi-step migration plan, which moved each location separately over the course of 7 months without interrupting normal business operations.

The Benefits:
By cutting down the number of servers and application instances, AZ’s general maintenance costs were drastically reduced. The cost of IT maintenance was also reduced, as separate IT support contracts with local vendors were no longer required. Current maintenance of all systems and applications averages ten hours per month.

Allin is currently supporting the application and all IT operations for AZ. The post-deployment support and maintenance contract, including hosting in the Allin Consulting data center, includes data backup, hardware maintenance/troubleshooting, and application error correction.
